Omar Martinez
High School: I go to Sullivan High School and I am in the Medical & Health Careers Academy, a rigorous four year college preparatory program. All my Classes are Honors or AP except my double period Medical classes.
Favorite Class: My favorite class this year was my AP English class because I love to write. It was intense and very rewarding.
Favorite Activity: I love to volunteer in my community and to tutor. Also, I love to run in Run-for-a-cause races. I ran in the ‘07 turkey trot and the ’08 Shamrock Shuffle. Both were 8KM races.
Favorite Teacher/Counselor: My favorite teacher is Ms. Pardys, my AP English and Division teacher, because she has always pushed me to be a better person. Plus, she is an amazing teacher.
My Favorite way to relax: When I want to relax, I like to sit in my room and play my black Yamaha acoustic guitar.
My Favorite book: I like to read almost anything but one of my favorites is probably The Color Purple.
The College(s) I am interested in attending: My first choice is U of I Urbana-Champaign and my second choice is UIC.
My Dream Profession is: I want to be a doctor of internal medicine or a heart surgeon.
Biggest concern about college: My biggest concern right now is the money. I know I have the brains and social skills to do well so I am confident about that.
When I go to college, I most look forward to: Entering a college classroom and being challenged by motivated professors.
The piece of advice that I would give to a high school freshman about preparing for college is: To take 4 years of core classes and to pick honors and AP because they give you a small taste of what you are headed for.
My hero is: Both my parents because although neither of them graduated from high school, they have pushed me and my younger sister to be better people and they want us to succeed.
