Trick or Treat:

Taking the Fright Out of the Dreaded College Essay

What do college essays and Halloween pumpkins have in common? They were both "worked over" at a workshop held at Nuveen Investments for scholars from the College Bound Class of 2011.

Mentor Teddy Greenstein, a college sports writer for the Chicago Tirbune, led the writing session by offering his "Top Ten Tips for A Terrific College Essay." Using a published article written by his colleague, Teddy took students through various writing techniques designed to help students create interest and imagery in their personal statements. Following the presentation and Q&A, scholars worked to polish their prepared statements in small groups or individually with their mentors.

To celebrate the near completion of their college application process, scholars and mentors turned their attention to a pumpkin drawing contest, with prizes awarded for funniest, scariest and most creative pumpkins.
