Mr. Chico was a founder of Chicagoland Scholarship (which merged with Scholarship Chicago 2002), an organization dedicated to helping Hispanic youth attend college. Today, he serves as a member of Scholarship Chicago's Executive Committee helping to direct the foundation?s strategic direction and community outreach.

He is the former President of the Chicago Board of Education. Mr. Chico is a member of the board of directors of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, the Economic Club of Chicago, the Chicago Urban League, the University of Illinois Alumni Association, and the City of Chicago After School Matters. He serves on the boards of trustees of the Field Museum, the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, and DePaul University, and on the Loyola University School of Law Board of Governors. He is a member of the Commercial Club of Chicago, the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts, the Chicago Committee of the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations, and the Boys and Girls Club.
